Mississippi kites (Ictinia mississippiensis) have become an abundant raptor in many urban and exurban areas throughout the Southern Great Plains of the United States. These sleek, pearly gray raptors often hunt together and nest colonially in stands of trees, from windbreaks on southern prairies to old-growth bottomlands in the Southeast (and even on city parks and golf courses). Reproductive success was analyzed by the Mayfield method, and activity patterns were categorized and analyzed from time budget data to identify biotic and behavioral factors that may regulate the success of colony and single nesting pairs.Ĭopyright is held by the author who has granted the Oklahoma State University Library the non-exclusive right to share this material in its institutional repository. We located 39 Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis) nests during the 20 breeding seasons in the White River National Wildlife Refuge in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley of Arkansas, USA. The Mississippi Kite makes a streamlined silhouette as it careens through the sky on the hunt for small prey, or dive-bombs intruders that come too close to its nest tree. Shelterbelts were selected and inspected periodically to estimate reproductive success and to observe activity patterns. The Mississippi Kite is the semiannual journal of the Mississippi Ornithological Society providing articles that advance the study of birdlife in the state of Mississippi. Life History Mississippi kites are very social in all activities. In flight, this bird is smooth, graceful, and buoyant. The Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis) is a species of bird found in Central and North America. ![]() It has a completely black tail, deep red eyes, and yellow to red legs. The purpose of this study was to determine if significant differences existed between the nesting chronology and reproductive success of single nesting pairs and that of colony nesting pairs of Mississippi kites, and to determine to what extent the size of the colony and activity patterns were influenced by the sex of the birds, time of day~ stage of breeding cycle, clutch size, and nest height-tree height characteristics. Description The Mississippi kite is a beautiful, falcon-like bird whose body is an overall gray color and whose head is a lighter ashy gray. ![]()
